Small school state basketball pairings released
Olathe finished a place ahead of Grand Valley in this past week’s Class 3A Western Slope District girls basketball tournament, but Grand Valley received the higher seed when the state playoff pairings were announced Sunday.
The Cardinals (17-5) received the 10th seed overall and will face 23rd-seed Kent Denver (14-8) in a subregional opener at host Manitou Springs, the seventh seed.
All first-round subregional games are Friday, and second-round games are Saturday, and the highest seed in the subregional is the host school.
Olathe (17-5) is seeded 12th and plays No. 21 Denver Science and Tech Stapleton (10-13) at subregion host Peak to Peak High School, the fifth seed.
Cedaredge (16-6) also made the 3A state field and got the 17th seed, which pits the Bruins against No. 16 Centauri (15-6) at subregion host Holy Family, the tourney’s top seed.
CLASS 3A boys
In the Class 3A boys state playoffs, Grand Valley (14-8) received the 13th seed and opens with a subregional game Friday against No. 19 The Pinnacle (17-5) at host Colorado Springs Christian, the No. 3 seed.
CLASS 2A boys
In the Class 2A boys state playoffs, Paonia (17-5) will play Mancos (15-7) in a Region 5 first-round game Friday at Palisade High School.
In the other Region 5 first-round game, Meeker (15-6) faces Resurrection Christian (18-4).
Game times remain to be set.
The winners play in the regional final Saturday at Palisade, with the winner advancing to the state quarterfinals the following week.
CLASS 2A girls
In the Class 2A girls state playoffs, Paonia (18-5) will play Ignacio (7-13) in a Region 3 first-round game Friday at Fort Lewis College in Durango.
In a Region 5 first-round game Friday at Palisade High School, Meeker (20-2) will play Nucla (12-9).
In a Region 1 first-round game Friday at Adams State in Alamosa, Hotchkiss (11-9) will face Simla (17-5).
Game times remain to be set. The winners play in regional finals Saturday, with each regional champ advancing to the state quarterfinals the following week.
