Sneddon’s perfect game lifts ‘Cats to sweep

Jenny Sneddon threw a perfect game in the opener and Fruita Monument High School rapped 31 hits as it swept a season-opening softball doubleheader from Montezuma-Cortez on Friday.

Sneddon struck out seven batters in the first game, a 17-0 triumph that was shortened to five innings by the run rule.

“The kid threw strikes,” Wildcats coach Jack Thomas said. “She moved the softball in and out. She had good command and did a good job of changing speeds. She was hitting all of her spots.”

And the Wildcats were hitting most of the pitches being thrown to them. They collected 16 hits in the opener and broke the game open with eight runs in the third inning.

Kenzi Decrow achieved perfection of her own, going 4 for 4 at the plate to lead Fruita. She hit a solo home run and two-run triple to finish with three RBI. Mariah O’Dell and Rachel Skillicorn added three hits apiece, including a home run by O’Dell.

In the second game, Fruita had a pair of seven-run innings en route to a 22-5 victory. Winning pitcher Mallory Paulson helped her cause with a grand slam in the second inning. She doubled twice and drove in five runs. Skillicorn joined her with three hits as the Wildcats finished with 15 hits and drew eight walks.

Central swept a doubleheader 11-0 and 12-0 at Durango.

Basalt’s Cody Banc caught a
10-yard pass on the first play of overtime as the Longhorns defeated Paonia 13-6 in a nonconference season opener for both teams.

Paonia’s chance to tie the game in overtime ended when the Longhorns sacked the Eagles’ quarterback on fourth down.

Paonia led 6-0 after three quarters, but Jonny Medreno’s five-yard run with about seven minutes left in the fourth forced the extra time.
