GJ women’s team wins district title

A Grand Junction women’s tennis team accomplished a rare feat last weekend.

The Grand Junction Tennis Club women’s 3.5 55-older team won the 2013 United States Tennis Association’s Colorado district tournament championship at Pinehurst Country Club in Denver.

“I’m totally ecstatic,” team captain Gaynell Colaric said. “There is a little luck involved. You have to be tough-minded.”

The team won five duals in two days. Each dual included three doubles matches. The Grand Junction team won its flight, a semifinal, then the championship.

This is the first year for a women’s 3.5 55-older draw. The team advances to the Intermountain Sectional, which takes place in March in Las Vegas. The Intermountain Sectional includes district champions from Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming.

Grand Junction team members are Colaric (captain), Nancy Beckwith, Cindy Burke, Judy Callison, Carla Eden, Monna Fisher, Linda Gilmore and Linda Hughes.

The women played on the age 50-older team last year and reached the Colorado District semifinals.
