CMU earns academic award

Colorado Mesa’s volleyball team performed well on the court and in the classroom in 2013-14.

The Mavericks, who finished 21-8, had a team grade-point average of 3.5 for the 2013-14 school year to earn an American Volleyball Coaches Association team academic award.

“I am proud of the team for their hard work on the court, but I am even more proud of them for their work in the classroom,” CMU coach Dave Fleming said in a news release. “This award recognizes that hard work.”

Colorado Mesa was one of 94 NCAA Division II programs to receive the award for posting a team GPA of 3.3 or higher. CSU-Pueblo was the only other RMAC school to receive the award.

The AVCA announced a record 676 high school and college teams (all levels) have earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2013-14 season. This number surpassed the previous year’s total of 623.

The Mavericks open the 2014 season Sept. 5-6 at the West Texas A&M Classic in Canyon, Texas.
