Mavs lose close matches to Mines
The Colorado School of Mines won five matches, including one by forfeit and one by major decision, to defeat the No. 20 Colorado Mesa wrestling team 19-15 on Wednesday night in Golden.
Mines redshirt freshman Alec Bird won an 8-0 major decision over Korey Kennedy at 197 pounds to give the Orediggers the victory.
Mines (3-6, 2-5 RMAC) built a 9-0 with a forfeit victory at 125 and a 5-0 victory at 133.
No. 8 James Martinez started Mesa’s rally with a 4-0 victory at 141. Jon Gappmaier picked up a big win with a 6-3 victory over No. 8 Steven Kelly at 157. Zak Slotten won 7-3 at 174, No. 8 Nick Petersen won 4-2 at 184 and Paco Retana-Quinones defeated Grand Junction High School graduate Robert Tucker 8-3 at heavyweight.
Mesa (8-12, 3-6 RMAC) is off until the NCAA West Regionals Feb. 25-26 in Hays, Kan.
Colorado Mesa freshman Kathleen Moore qualified for the Alpine Ski Western Regional Championships after placing in a race last weekend at Winter Park.
She was the top individual finisher not on a qualifying team. She placed 20th overall with 119 total points.
Moore will race in the 2012 Western Regional Championships Feb. 23-25 at Mt. Werner in Steamboat Springs.
