Mesa men win sportsmanship award

The Colorado Mesa University men’s lacrosse team won an award in its inaugural season.

The Mavericks recently received the 2011 James ‘Ace’ Adams District 9 Sportsmanship award.

The award is presented by the U.S. Lacrosse Men’s Collegiate Officials Committee to the college or university in each district whose coaches, players and fans exhibit the best sportsmanship during the season. Facilities for the officials and support for the officiating crew is part of the criteria.

“It is an honor to win this award because it is voted on by officials,” CMU coach A.J. Stevens said in a press release. “It says a lot about us that we are being respectful and professional in the way we do our jobs.”

District 9 includes Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and New Mexico.

Colorado Mesa (6-8 in 2011) opens the 2012 season at 1 p.m. Feb. 25 against Adams State at Walker Field.
