Chipola moves to No. 1 in poll
As expected, plenty of shifting occurred from the preseason to the first regular-season poll of NJCAA Division I baseball teams.
Four of the top five teams in the preseason poll aren’t ranked in the list released Tuesday, including defending national champion Yavapai College (Arizona).
Chipola College (Florida) is 19-4, receiving eight of 10 first-place votes to move into the No. 1 spot, up from No. 4 in the preseason.
Walters State (Tennessee) is off to a 21-3 start and ranked second, followed by Dyersburg State (Tennessee), which is 16-2. Gulf Coast State (Florida) is No. 4 at 19-3, followed by McLennan College (Texas), which is ranked fifth at 15-3.
Yavapai (13-11) is 2-6 in conference play and dropped out of the poll, along with preseason No. 2 San Jacinto College-North (Texas), which is 16-6 and 6-0 in league play. Iowa Western (6-6) received votes, but preseason No. 4 Cowley County (Kansas) and No. 5 Santa Fe (Florida) also dropped out. Several of the teams that dropped out of the rankings were not submitted for consideration — the NJCAA requires teams to report game results and statistics to be considered for voting.
