Griffins in 2 state consolation finals
The District 51 Griffins qualified a pair of relays for the consolation finals Friday at the Class 5A state swim meet in Thornton.
The 200-meter freestyle team just missed qualifying for the finals, placing ninth in 1 minute, 29.45 seconds. The team was made up of Travis Newland, Jason Cochran, Nice Gunaydin and Tyler Sweet.
The 400 freestyle relay team placed 14th in 3:17.20. The team is made of Sweet, Gunaydin, Newland and Noah Butzine.
Newland just missed the consolation finals in the 50 freestyle, finishing 17th.
At the Class 4A swim meet at the Air Force Academy, Montrose qualified individuals in three events and one relay for today’s finals.
Ryan King qualified second in the 500 freestyle and sixth in the 200-meter freestyle. Cayden Christianson made the finals in the 200 individual medley with the fourth-fastest time.
The Indians’ 200 medley relay team made the finals with an eighth-place finish.
Noah Stangebye qualified for the consolation finals in the 100 backstroke, and Christianson in the 100 breaststroke.
The Indians’ 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams also qualified for the consolation finals.
JUCO World Series
Kids clinic is May 26 at Suplizio
The 19th annual kids clinic for the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series begins at 5:30 p.m. at Suplizio Field on May 26.
Boys and girls ages 5-12 are invited to join players from JUCO teams on the field for baseball drills — including pitch speed with a radar gun.
Giveaways at the free clinic include T-shirts and Whiffle balls and bats.
