Mesa duo garners RMAC awards

Colorado Mesa’s Justin Hastings and Brock Martin were awarded the RMAC men’s swimmer and diver of the week honors.

Hastings took first place in the 100-yard backstroke (52.21 seconds) and the 200 back (1 minute, 53.58 seconds). The sophomore also was on the third-place 200 medley relay (1:36.78) and the school-record-setting 200 freestyle relay (1:21.51).

Martin secured his first NCAA-qualifying dive on the 1-meter platform and his third on the 3-meter board last weekend. The senior took second against Utah on Friday with a score of 296.05 and third against BYU on Saturday. He has made more NCAA cuts than any other Division II diver in the nation.

The Mavericks compete Saturday at Adams State and Sunday at the Colorado School of Mines.

Mavs’ Burneo makes district team

Colorado Mesa defender Sam Burneo made the Capital One Academic All-District 6 team, which was announced Thursday.

The senior from Las Vegas has a 3.92 grade-point average in kinesiology. She is eligible to earn Academic All-America status.

Burneo is a two-time all-district recipient, a three-time RMAC All-Academic selection, a three-time All-RMAC selection and this season’s RMAC Academic Player of the Year.

She has started 69 matches in her career and scored her first career goal this season.
