MARK STERN: History is part of his future

Editor’s Note: The Daily Sentinel Student-Athlete of the Week is selected by the school’s athletic director. Grand Junction Greg King selected Mark Stern, who has a 3.897 grade-point average. The honor will rotate among the four School District 51 high schools.

Student-Athlete: Mark Stern

School: Grand Junction

Sport: Golf, Basketball

GPA: 3.897

Future: Only a junior, Stern said he wants to pursue going to college in Washington D.C. as well as working at the Smithsonian

What do you want to study? History

Why? We had a teacher in middle school that made it really interesting and I always thought that stuff was a lot better than crunching numbers in math and science.

Favorite U.S. president: The 16th president, Abraham Lincoln.  “He started living in a little cabin and became one of the greatest presidents and really united the country.”

Favorite subject: U.S. History (especially subjects involving World War II and the Civil War)

Smart-Jockspeak: “It is tough because with golf we are gone a lot. You always have to try to stay on top of things and try to get homework before we leave, then do it on the bus or right after your round.”
