Fruita’s Smith struggling at PRCA Finals

Tyler Smith, 23, of Fruita has not placed in any of the first six rounds in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Wrangler National Finals Rodeo bull riding.

He scored 80.50 in the first round on Tombstone, but hasn’t rode a bull for the required eight seconds in the second through sixth rounds.

Round 7 was Wednesday night. The national finals champion is determined after 10 rounds.

Skiing

Powderhorn set to open next week

Friday is the last day season passes for Powderhorn Ski Resort will be available.

Season passes are available from noon to 5 p.m. on Friday at Home Loan State Bank, 204 N. 4th Street. Powderhorn opens Dec. 16.

The Learn to Ride program is available for first time skiers. It is $350 and includes three lessons, lift ticket and rental fee. Register by calling the ski and ride center 970-268-5700, ext. 2080.

The Learn to Ride program is Jan. 1-3 or Jan. 8, 15 and 22.

College Swimming

Mesa’s Martin is RMAC diver of the week

Mesa State’s Brock Martin is the RMAC men’s diver of the week.

The freshman from Evanston, Wyo., took first place in the 1 and 3 meter diving competitions for the fifth time this season last weekend at the Maverick Invitational. He scored 474.55 in the 1-meter dive and 483.10 in the 3-meter dive.

Martin has already qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships in March in San Antonio.

This is Martin’s fifth RMAC diver of the week award.
