Fruita girls win in Kirtland tourney

The Fruita Monument High School girls basketball team defeated Thoreau (N.M.) 55-48 in the first day of the Bronco Invitational in Kirtland, N.M.

The Wildcats had a 27-21 halftime lead, but trailed 38-35 heading into the fourth.

In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats got 10 points from Lauren Labonde, who scored a game-high 24 points.

“Labonde got aggressive in the fourth,” Fruita Monument coach Dan Schmalz said. “It was huge to respond, and we played just well enough to win.”

Taylor Johnson added 11 for the Wildcats. Fruita Monument plays the winner of Bloomfield (N.M.) and Shiprock (N.M.) at 5:30 p.m.
