Fort Lewis squeaks by Mavericks
Joe Barnd’s lone goal was enough to lift the 25th-ranked Fort Lewis men’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Mesa State on Wednesday in Durango.
Barnd stole a Maverick pass, catching Mesa goalkeeper Chris Raines off guard and scored in the 34th minute from 18 yards out.
Mesa State (6-6-2, 2-6-2 RMAC) outshot the Skyhawks (9-4-0, 8-1-0 RMAC) 10-7, but it wasn’t enough.
Raines made three saves. Fort Lewis goalkeeper Kamran Khyltash had five saves.
Mesa State outmatched vs. ‘Hawks
Fort Lewis controlled play from the start, defeating the Mesa State women’s team 3-1 in Durango.
The sixth-ranked Skyhawks (12-1-0, 8-1-0 RMAC) scored two goals early in the second half to take a comfortable 3-0 lead.
Kelci Crispe intercepted an errant pass and scored in the 69th minute for Mesa State (4-7-2, 2-6-1 RMAC). Mesa goalkeeper Alicia Kalher made eight saves.
Fort Lewis outshot the Mavs 27-10 and 11-5 on goal.
Mavs’ Martin is RMAC diver of week
Mesa State’s Brock Martin is the RMAC men’s diver of the week.
The freshman from Evanston, Wyo., took third place in the 1-meter dive (421.50) and third in the 3-meter dive (422.05) last weekend at the Mesa State Intermountain Shootout.
The Mavericks swim in the University of Wyoming Invitational on Friday and in the University of Denver Relays on Saturday.
