Haley is new coach of Griffins
Jessica Haley, the girls swim coach at Fruita Monument High School, will take over as the District 51 Griffins boys swim team.
Haley has been the girls coach at Fruita the past three years, and before that was an assistant swim coach at Legacy High School in Broomfield. Haley, who teaches at Redlands Middle School, was the head coach of the Greeley Gators club team for seven years. She replaces Dale Leonhart, who resigned earlier this school year.
Mesa men picked third, women fourth in RMAC preseason poll
The Colorado Mesa men’s swim team is picked to finish third in a tie with Colorado School of Mines, and the women’s team is picked fourth in the RMAC preseason poll, voted on by the conference coaches.
Grand Canyon is favored to win the men’s conference, with Incarnate Word second. Incarnate Word is first in the women’s poll and Grand Canyon second. Both are affiliate members of the RMAC in swimming, along with the women’s teams from Texas-Permian Basin, Minnesota State-Moorhead and Northern State.
Austin Detra, a sophomore who transferred to Mesa from the University of Florida, is on the preseason all-RMAC men’s team and Jaclyn McMillen made the women’s preseason all-conference team.
GJ pair win Triple Crown awards
Two Grand Junction youth wrestlers, Dylan Martinez and Dawson Collins, won the Rocky Mountain Nationals Triple Crown award.
Martinez won five national titles in the RMN Events series in the 2010-2011 season and also won the Rocky Mountain Nationals Ring of Fame, something only two wrestlers have achieved in the same year.
The Rocky Mountain Nationals draws the top amateur wrestlers age 5-18 in the country since 1999. It expanded to three events, with wrestlers who won all three RMN events in the same year win the Triple Crown award. There are now 27 RMN events in the series, so in order to win the Triple Crown, a wrestler must win three titles, one of which must be the Rocky Mountain Nationals tournament in March.
The 10th annual Monster Match tournament is Nov. 5 at the National Western Complex in Denver.
