Ballerz win Atkins Memorial tourney
The Valley Ballerz defeated Coal Ridge 70-37 last weekend to win the 30th annual Stephen Atkins Memorial basketball tournament.
The Ballerz, an eighth grade Grand Junction boys team, have won three tournaments this season and are undefeated.
The team includes Broderick Robinson, Greg Eccher, Tyler Heinsma, Henry Carmichael, Ike Fortner, Robert Harrison, Tristan Lafferty and Skyler Miller.
Forney wins Palisade Invitational
Monday at Lincoln Park, Central High School’s Loren Forney shot a 79 to win the Palisade Invitational. Forney’s solid round propelled the Warriors to take the team title with a 264. Fruita Monument finished in second place with a 279 led by Jessica Sinner’s 87. Grand Junction had a 290 team score with Jordan Fellhauer turning in a team high 90. Host team Palisade finished with a 354 led by Kate Shuman’s 113.
Mavs split doubleheader at Regis
Mesa State split its doubleheader Monday at Regis, dropping the first game 6-2 but coming back to win the final game of the series 10-4.
Nikki Haberkorn hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning off Sara Jordan to break open the first game and give Regis a 6-1 lead. Lita Romero hit an RBI double in the seventh but the Mavericks (8-10, 6-10 RMAC) couldn’t get any closer. Regis winner Bianca Holley struck out 11 batters in the win.
Cierra Lard scattered 10 hits in the second game and got plenty of run support. The Mavericks scored four runs in the second inning, one in the third and five in the fourth to secure the series split.
Whitney Bailey had a two-run double in the second inning and Gabi Parra and Katie Mitchell each had RBI singles and Danie Vallie a two-run single in the fifth.
The Mavericks play CSU-Pueblo on Friday and Saturday at Bergman Field. Saturday is the Mavs’ annual Swing For Life game to raise money for cancer research.
