Sports in Brief: Dominguez is player of the week
Michael Dominguez sealed Mesa State’s eighth consecutive victory Sunday by hitting four free throws in the final 47 seconds. Monday, the senior guard from Santa Fe, N.M., was selected the RMAC West Division player of the week.
Dominguez scored a game-high 21 points against Metro State, including the crucial free throws, and had 16 points and six assists Saturday against Regis. Dominguez, who averages 18 points a game for Mesa State (8-0, 4-0 RMAC), has been the team’s leading scorer in five of the eight games this season.
Sunday’s win gave the Mavericks their best start in Jim Heaps’ 14 years as head coach. In the 2000-2001 season, Mesa State started out 7-0 overall, 3-0 in the RMAC on its way to a 20-7 record and the RMAC West Division title.
Regis’ Porter wins 500th game
