GJ tops Montezuma-Cortez
Grand Junction turned up the heat in the third quarter to open Southwestern League play with a 63-33 victory Friday over Montezuma-Cortez in Cortez.
The Tigers (7-4, 1-0 SWL) attacked the basket and kept Cortez out of the paint. It resulted in the Tigers scoring 23 points in the third quarter and limiting Cortez to 12.
Tommy Powers and Jesse Smith led Grand Junction with 13 points each. Casey Burns added 11.
The Panthers made seven field goals in the game.
The Tigers’ girls team rallied from an early deficit to defeat Montezuma-Cortez 65-61 in Cortez
Five players scored in double figures for the Tigers (8-4, 1-0 SWL), led by Paula Lage with 16 points. Fawn Brady had 14 and Jamie Derrieux had 13.
Cortez jumped out to a 10-point lead by the end of the first quarter. Grand Junction cut the deficit to two after three quarters and outscored the Panthers 19-13 in the fourth.
Central dominates Cheyenne Mtn.
Seven Central wrestlers pinned their opponent to lead the Warriors to a 57-15 victory over Cheyenne Mountain in a non-league dual Thursday in Pueblo.
Laurence Balerio (103), Matthew Gurule (112), Anthony Fellar (125), Zach Short (152), Evan Pinchak (171), Jerron Sparks (189) and Kyle Jamison (215) had pinfalls.
Jacqub Gurule (119), Steve Rock (130) and Willy Holdren (145) won decisions.
