GJ Fire advance in Phoenix
Grand Junction Soccer Club’s Fire FC under-13 girls soccer team advanced to the quarterfinals of the 31st Annual President’s Day Soccer Tournament last weekend in Phoenix.
In match play, Fire FC defeated Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley United 2-1 on goals by Taylor Wood and Leah Swander, both assisted on corner kicks by Baseley McClaskey. The Fire also defeated Utah’s state champion, LaRoca, 2-0 on goals by Swander and Courtney Coffey, an assist by Taylor Chaffetz and a shutout by goalie Elie Borszich.
The Fire lost 1-0 to Nike Rush’s National Select team in the quarterfinal match.
The win over LaRoca was the third state champion the Fire FC has defeated this season. State champions from Colorado and Nevada have also lost to the Fire this season.
Kearney tournament called off
The season-opening RMAC-NSIC Crossover softball tournament, scheduled for this weekend in Kearney, Neb., has been canceled.
Weather and poor field conditions forced the University of Nebraska-Kearney to call off the 25-game tournament, which featured 10 teams from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, including Mesa State, and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
The Mavericks, ranked No. 22 in the nation, were to have played five games, including a rematch of last season’s NCAA Super Regional final against Winona State (Minn.) University.
