Morris finishes 2nd in giant slalom

Birgit Morris led the Powderhorn Race Club with a second-place finish in the girls J5 (ages 9-10) division at the Crested Butte Giant Slalom on Jan. 2-3 in Crested Butte.

Powderhorn’s two J3 racers, Jonah Howe and Keino Davis, had top-10 finishes in all four of their races.

The Powderhorn Club has nine skiers ages 7 to 14 on the 2010 USSA team.

Tennis

Shields to receive pair of awards

Clancy Shields will receive two awards Jan. 29 during the USTA Colorado Tennis Hall of Fame Gala in Denver.

Shields, who grew up in Grand Junction, will receive the Vernon John Award as the male collegiate player of the year — Shields played at Boise State University — and the Jim Landin Award as the male player of the year.

Five people will be inducted into the Hall of Fame: Chester Harris, who helped players from diverse backgrounds get involved in tennis; Vernon John, a finalist in the 1936 NCAA championships; Rhona Kaczmarczyk, who was a member of Ireland’s Federation Cup team and won several Colorado open and national age division titles; Jack TerBorg, who won 17 major Intermountain/Colorado championships;and Becky Varnum Bucolo, who went 68-0 and won four No. 1 singles state titles in high school and was an All-American at Notre Dame.
