Spots still open for Colorado West Amateur

The 52nd annual Home Loan Colorado West Amateur Golf Championship has spots available for players for next weekend’s event at Bookcliff Country Club.

The three-day, stroke-play tournament starts Friday, June 7, and the entry fee is $175.

Tournament director Brett Winder said he’d like to get the field up to 160 players, which has been the norm in recent years, although it used to draw more than 200 golfers.

“We’re down in numbers. Usually we’re full by now,” Winder said.

The champions in each flight will win $750. There usually are five flights, Winder said.

Defending champion Sean Robbins, who plays for Colorado Mesa University, will be back, as will runner-up Brandon Bingaman, who finished his career at CMU this spring. Robbins stormed back from a six-stroke deficit on the final day to win last year.

Winder said the golf course is in great shape, and the greens “are back to where they used to be. They’re going to be lightning-quick for the tournament.”
