State golf: Olkowski 2nd in 5A on 1st day
Cold and wet conditions at CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora on Monday didn’t keep Grand Junction’s Canon Olkowski from a hot finish at the Class 5A state tournament.
Olkowski finished the first round at 1-under-par 70 after closing his round with three consecutive birdies and a par to finish the first round in a three-way tie for second place. He’s also only one shot behind tournament leader Dillon Stewart of Fossil Ridge, and his play helped the Tigers remain within a reasonable distance of the top-four teams.
Grand Junction heads into today’s second and final round tied for 226 and in a fifth-place tie with Fairview. Regis’ 217 leads the way, with Cherry Creek (221), Fossil Ridge (222), ThunderRidge (224) following.
Starting on the back nine on a day when rain coats and stocking caps were the preferred attire, Olkowski bogeyed the par-4 fifth hole to move to 2-over with four holes remaining. He finished with birdies on holes six, seven and eight before a par on the par-4 ninth to end the round.
Olkowski, Stewart and Regis Jesuit’s Calvin McCoy are tied for second place.
Fruita Monument’s top round came from Blake Andersen at 5-over 76, with Sean Kennedy finishing at 7-over. Grand Junction’s Blake Schneiter is at 5-over, with Carson Kerr at 9-over headed into today’s final round.
In Class 4A, Montrose holds a one-shot edge in the team standings at 233, with Valor Christian (234) and Evergreen (238) within striking distance. Jordan Jennings’ 75 is tied for fourth place and is two shots back of co-leaders Darren Edwards of Thompson Valley, Jake Welch of Valor and Tyler Severin of Roosevelt. Monrtose’s Micah Stangebye (76) and Rifle’s Jacob Smith (77) are close behind.
