Teams closing in on JUCO berths

Slowly but surely, teams are working their way toward Grand Junction.

Regional playoffs began over the weekend as junior college baseball teams try to qualify for the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series.

In Arizona, South Mountain and Cochise won semifinal series and play a best-of-three series Thursday and Friday to determine the Region 1 entrant to the West District playoffs.

Columbia State went through the Region 7 tournament in Gallatin, Tennessee, undefeated, beating Motlow State 8-4 in Sunday’s championship game. Columbia State plays at the Georgia state champion in two weeks for the East Central title

In the Eastern District, Louisburg is undefeated and plays Sumter this afternoon to reach the title game. Sumter defeated Guilford Tech 5-0.

In elimination games today, Florence Darlington plays Pitt and Spartanburg Methodist faces Guilford Tech. Spartanburg, which has a protected spot in the district tournament after winning the regular season conference title, lost its first game 8-7 to Guilford before beating USC Lancaster 10-2 on Sunday.

Monroe College (New York) beat Globe (New York) in two games in Region 15 and plays ASA in a best-of-three series this week for a spot in the Eastern District tournament.

The Central District is down to the final eight teams after sub-district playoffs in Kansas. No. 15 Johnson County is the top seed and faces Kansas City Community College in the first round Friday. Coffeyville plays Garden City, Cowley faces Butler and Seward County plays Hutchinson. Seward beat last year’s district champion, Neosho County, 14-2 on Sunday to advance.
