Thompson’s late goal lifts Mavs past Rollins

Lauren Thompson’s goal with less than four minutes to play Thursday broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Colorado Mesa women’s soccer team its third straight win, 2-1 over Rollins College (Florida) in Lakewood.

Thompson’s goal, her first of the season, came off a pass from Halie Bergeron at the 86:48 mark. Less than one minute later, the Tars (1-3) took a shot to tie the game, but it went wide left.

Karina Santin, who took Rollins’ final shot, opened the scoring 16:39 into the game off a corner kick.

The Mavericks (3-2) tied it when Heidi Wendt’s shot 5 1/2 minutes before halftime was redirected into the net by a Rollins player.

Colorado Mesa, which opens RMAC play Sunday at Westminster, outshot Rollins 16-12.

Freshman Jessica Jolley won her third straight game in goal, needing to make only one save — the Tars had only three shots on goal.
