Tigers finish second in 5A Region 2
Grand Junction High School placed second at the Class 5A, Region 2 wrestling tournament at Westminster High on Saturday as Tigers Jacob Trujillo, Gage Casey and Jessie Hoffschneider were individual champions.
Pomona won the tournament with 198 points, followed by Grand Junction’s 177.
Central took fourth with 155.5.
Also for Grand Junction, Louis Guillen (132 pounds), Dylon Thompson (138), Robbie Gonzalez (195) and Sam Monahan (285) qualified for state.
Central’s Jacob Rubalcaba (second at 126), Anthony Feller (second at 145), Willy Holdren (third at 152), Caleb Hendricks (third at 170), Caleb Brown (third at 182) and Thomas Holman (fourth at 220) all qualified for state.
Feller, ranked No. 4 at 145 pounds, lost an 11-3 decision to Pomona’s Isaiah Rosales, No. 2, in the final.
Class 5A, Region 3
Fruita Monument took fifth place at Bear Creek High School and the Wildcats’ Jacob Seely pinned Gateway’s Joey Webb in 3 minutes, 47 seconds to take the 160-pound title.
Aidan Woomer took second place at 152 pounds, losing a 7-2 decision in the final to Rocky Mountain’s Derick Padilla.
Dallas Bernal also was a runner-up, dropping a 1-0 decision at 170 pounds to Fountain-Fort Carson’s Seth Wilson.
Isaac Rodriguez (third at 145 pounds) and Clayton Mueller (fourth at 126) also qualified for state.
“We exceeded all our seedings,” Fruita coach Dan Van Hoose said.
Seely, a 32-13 freshman, was a No. 3 seed.
“He’s just really blossomed this year,” Van Hoose said. “He’s worked very hard.”
Class 3A, Region 1
Olathe won the tournament with 207 points over Rifle (164), Hotchkiss (161) and Grand Valley.
Olathe had five individual champions — Austin Shank (106 pounds), Trenton Piatt (113), Zach Shank (132), Wyatt Yarnell (145) and Casey Childs (285).
Zach Shank, 40-0, pinned all of his opponents, including a 46-second fall in the final over Salida’s Anthony Muth.
Other area champions were Hotchkiss’s Joe Boyle (160), Grand Valley’s David Witt (170 pounds), Hotchkiss’s Conner Beard (220).
