Tigers host first-round playoff game
The Grand Junction High School girls lacrosse team just missed getting a first-round bye, but it will open play in the Class 5A state playoffs with a home game.
The 13th-seeded Tigers will host No. 20 St. Mary’s Academy of Englewood at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Colorado Mesa University’s Walker Field.
The top 12 seeds in the 20-team tournament received byes, while the next eight teams must play games to earn berths in the field of 16. If Grand Junction wins, it will play at Kent Denver in the second round, date and time to be determined.
Tigers coach Alexis Rawlings said her players won’t mind playing a first-round game.
“It’s all right,” she said. “It’s good for the girls to have to work a little harder. I think they’d rather play than have a week off.”
Rawlings said she knows a lot about St. Mary’s Academy, and it has a good program, but, “They’re beatable. The girls just have to bring their ‘A’ game.”
