Tigers’ scoring spurt too much for Demons

Grand Junction High School’s boys soccer team overcame an early two-score deficit, rattling off seven unanswered goals in a 7-2 win at Glenwood Springs.

Jake Chaffetz broke through for the Tigers (3-0) in the 25th minute, leading an offensive surge that continued into the second half against the Demons (2-1).

Chaffetz and Jose Avila scored two goals apiece, with Abram Sanchez, Declan O’Gara and Garrison Corn each scoring once.

The Tigers open Southwestern League play Sept. 12 with a home match against Montrose.

Moffat County 1, Central 0: Juan Loya’s goal in the 20th minute held up for Moffat County, which withstood a 14-shot onslaught from the Warriors en route to a non-league victory.

Goalkeeper Alejandro Tarin had nine saves for the Warriors (1-3), who were coming off a 6-0 victory against Palisade.

“They never gave up,” Central coach Doug Beach said. “We dominated them in shots in the second half, but they didn’t make any big mistakes.”

Delta 8, Palisade 0: The Panthers (3-1) won their second consecutive game and kept the Bulldogs (0-4) winless.

Shalynn Smith and Alexis Dormio each had 10 kills and Rose Mastrud added three aces to help Rifle beat Summit 25-16, 20-25, 25-21, 25-17. Eve Miller added seven kills for the Bears (2-3, 1-2 4A Western Slope League).
