Tigers top ‘Cats in tennis

Grand Junction’s Cameron Weckerly returns a shot Wednesday during his 6-2, 6-2 victory over Fruita Monument’s Brandon Lovato in the No. 2 singles match at Canyon View Park. The Tigers won the dual 5-2.

Grand Junction won two singles and three doubles matches to beat Fruita Monument in boys tennis on Wednesday.

In a matchup of two players who moved into the No. 1 singles position, Grand Junction’s Cal Hegstrom cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Daniel Lastine.

The Tigers also won at No. 2 singles with Cameron Weckerly beating Brandon Lovato 6-2, 6-2.

At No. 3 singles, Fruita Monument’s Jackson Cesark beat Luke Aubert in a match that went to a third-set tiebreaker.

After winning the first set 6-4, Cesark had to regroup after getting blasted 6-0 by Aubert in the second set. Cesark won the tiebreaker 10-2.

In the doubles competition, Grand Junction picked up three straight set victories. Riley King and Max Nikkari won at No. 1, Tommy Mahre and Brandon Miller at No. 2, and Joseph Hirschbuhl and Max Weckerly at No. 3.
