Tigers triumphant at Yampa Valley

Grand Junction High School’s girls golfers thrived in the relaxed atmosphere of Monday’s two-person, best-ball tournament at Yampa Valley Golf Course in Craig.

With Ryann Tufly and Hanna Starritt combining on an 88 to claim fourth as a duo, and Shafer Rubalcaba and Avery Hill linking up on an 89 for fifth, the Tigers won the team title. Team scores were calculated by adding each school’s two two-person, best-ball scores.

Grand Junction’s 177 edged Palisade’s 180. Rifle finished third (181) and Palisade’s second duo fourth (184). Tournament host Moffat County (187) was fifth and Glenwood Springs sixth (204).

“It takes a little pressure off,” Tigers coach Clay Tufly said. “Late in the season, before we go to Gunnison on Friday and then regionals on Monday, it’s nice for the girls not to have to make every shot count.”

Rifle partners Taylor Walters and Alyx Carter combined on the top score for a duo, carding a 71.

Warriors take on Rolling Hills

It was a long, exhausting day for more than 35 teams’ worth of golfers at Rolling Hills Country Club in Golden on Monday.

Six-hour rounds were the norm, said Central High School girls golf coach Casey Doss, whose Warriors posted competitive scores on a challenging course.

Kiana Garcia and Sam Medina each carded 91s, with Jordan Eller chipping in a 95 and Taylor Head a 124 at the Wheat Ridge High School-hosted tournament. Doss did not have information on exactly where his players or team officially placed.
