Tigers cap perfect regular season in football
Grand Junction did its part, now it’s up to a committee.
The top-ranked team in Class 5A finished the regular season with a 41-6 victory over Durango on Friday night to win the Southwestern Conference for the second year in a row and will await its seed for the playoffs, which start next weekend.
Grand Junction (9-0, 4-0 SWC) entered the weekend No. 1 in the Colorado High School Activities Association wildcard points standings, which determine playoff seeds. The Tigers will be home.
Grand Junction senior quarterback Sean Rubalcaba completed 11 of 16 passes for 215 yards and three touchdowns as the Tigers built a 41-0 lead. Chandon Rose caught nine passes for 117 yards and one TD.
Durango (4-5) scored when Joe Keresey returned a fumble 44 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
Grand Junction’s defense limited the Demons to 122 yards in total offense, including 77 on the ground, and forced two turnovers.
The Tigers’ Jerreon Dennis scored on a 1-yard run for a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Rubalcaba completed a 63-yard score to Justin Whiting on their next possession for a 14-0 lead.
Rubalcaba tossed a 24-yard touchdown pass to Rose and a 12-yard TD pass to Austin Berk in the second quarter for a 28-0 halftime lead.
Grand Junction running back Kimani Robinson gave the Tigers a 35-0 lead with a 2-yard run and Austin Lewis scored on a 1-yard TD run in the third quarter.
Robinson led the rushing attack with 12 carries for 135 yards.
