Tigers get first SWL victory vs. Montrose

The Grand Junction High School volleyball team picked up its first Southwestern League win of the year Tuesday with a 17-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 15-13 victory at home against Montrose.

The Tigers (6-12, 1-7 Southwestern League) edged the Indians in a back-and-forth match.

Grand Junction coach Leslie Vines said neither team played its best, which forced the Tigers to take a back-to-basics approach.

Capri Reno had 30 digs for the Tigers, Kricket Adleman added 15 and Hannah Kimmel 14.

Justine Roof had five blocks. Roof and Adleman led the Tigers with nine kills each.

Alicia Copp and Margaret Harris combined for 23 assists.

The Tigers avenged a three-game loss to the Indians (6-10, 1-7 SWL).

The Tigers wrap up their season this weekend, hosting Durango on Friday and Montezuma-Cortez on Saturday.

Palisade rode a blocking frenzy by Audrey Steinkirchner to beat Delta 25-18, 25-18, 25-22 on the road.

The 6-foot-2 junior finished with nine blocks, eight solo. Steinkirchner also led the Bulldogs (11-7, 8-3 Western Slope League) with 13 kills.

Shannon Rhodes led Palisade with 26 assists. Jenny Thibodeau had a team-leading 10 digs and two aces and finished second in kills with seven. Tahverle Hodges had seven digs and two aces.

Palisade finishes its regular season Thursday at home against Glenwood Springs.

The Bulldogs have already clinched a district playoff berth.

Glenwood Springs defeated Palisade 4-2 in the Western Slope League finale for each team.

Casey Montoya scored two goals to lead the Demons to the victory. Travis Grange and Billy Steele also scored for Glenwood and goalkeeper Cane Albrect had seven saves.

For the first time in six years, Glenwood Springs (5-9-1, 2-7-1 WSL) will not qualify for the Class 4A state playoffs, but the Demons have 12 juniors returning next year.

The Bulldogs (2-11-2, 0-10-1 WSL) lost for the ninth time in their final 10 games.
