Tigers sending three to state cross country meet
Three Grand Junction High School runners qualified for the Class 5A state championships Friday at Denver City Park in the Region 1 meet.
Charlie Medina placed seventh in the boys race in 16 minutes, 56 seconds, and teammate Greg Eccher placed ninth in 17:03. Grand Junction placed eighth as a team with 165 points.
Trinity Simmons finished the girls race in 20:52 to place 15th, clinching the final state spot out of the region. The Tigers’ girls team placed sixth with 182 points.
The top 15 individuals, plus the top five boys teams and top four girls teams advance to state Oct. 29 at the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds.
Grand Junction’s Kyle Gibbons scored two goals to lead the Tigers to a 5-0 nonleague victory over Moffat County at Canyon View Park.
Andrew Hays, Andrew Murdock and Josh Murdock also scored and Michael Hansen made four saves for Grand Junction (4-8-3). The Tigers won their final three games of the season, outscoring their opponents 16-0.
Montrose 3, Central 0: Bryan Mayo scored two goals and Eliseo Gomez added one for the Indians, who led 2-0 at halftime.
Central (7-8, 4-6 SWL) managed only one shot; Antonio Tarin recorded seven saves.
Montezuma-Cortez handed Central a three-set loss, 25-14, 26-24, 25-15.
The Warriors (5-12, 3-6 SWL) got four kills from Robbi Termentozzi and 10 assists from Rayleigh Norton.
