Top-ranked Eagles ready for Del Norte

Paonia High School’s girls basketball team puts its 18-game winning streak on the line as the No. 1 seed in the Class 2A state basketball tournament starting Thursday in Pueblo.

The Eagles (22-1) are first up at the Pueblo Events Center, facing No. 8 Del Norte (17-5) at 8:45 a.m., the first of eight games in the 2A Great Eight, four girls and four boys.

Paonia’s only loss was to Class 4A Delta, 49-46, in the fifth game of the season, and the Eagles have won by a margin of nearly 30 points a game, averaging 66.8 points and allowing 39.4.

Olathe’s girls drew the No. 5 seed in the Class 3A Great Eight, facing No. 4 Trinidad, also at 8:45 a.m. Thursday at Moby Arena in Fort Collins. One of the Pirates’ two losses came to Paonia, the other to Class 5A Grand Junction. Olathe (22-2) has won 20 straight games.

Florence (15-9) drew the No. 1 seed and is Olathe’s half of the bracket.

Norwood (21-1) is seeded second in the Class 1A girls tournament at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland and plays No. 7 Kim (17-6).

Plateau Valley’s boys are seeded sixth with a 17-4 record and play Caliche (19-4) at 8:30 p.m. at the Budweiser Events Center in the Great Eight of the Class 1A boys tournament. Norwood (15-7) is seeded eighth and plays Sierra Grande (22-0) at 10:15 a.m.
