Trujillo’s title leads GJ to fourth-place finish in Northglenn

Eight Grand Junction High School wrestlers placed to lead the Tigers to a fourth-place team finish Saturday in the Northglenn Norse Invitational.

Jacob Trujillo won the 145-pound title to keep his undefeated record intact. The sophomore defeated Gateway (Aurora) freshman Deyaun Trueblood 18-5 in the final to run his record to 35-0. He pinned three opponents on his way to the final.

Louis Guillen (138) and Johnny Pauli (195) took third for the Tigers. Pauli defeated Hinkley’s Max Carbajal for third place after Carbajal defeated Pauli in the quarterfinals.

Grand Junction’s Kohlby Wells (113), Jeff Christeleit (126) and Matt King (182) took fourth place, Jet Nourse (106) placed sixth, and Hayden Reynolds (120) won the consolation bracket.

Nourse wrestled for Cody Lacy, whom Grand Junction coach Cole Allison held out because of a minor injury.

Pueblo Central won the team title with 163 points. Eagle Valley took second with 145.5, and Arapahoe was third with 135. Grand Junction scored 133 points.

Top of the Rockies: Central did not have any place-winners and finished 29th out of 33 teams at the Top of the Rockies tournament hosted by Centaurus High School in Lafayette.

Caleb Hendricks came the closest to placing. He reached the quarterfinals and was one victory away from finishing in the top six.

Screaming Eagle Invitational: Paonia had five individual champions and 13 place-winners to lead the host Eagles to the team title with 270 points.

Dove Creek was second with 168.5 points, Center was third (146) and Meeker was fifth (141.5).

Nucla’s Tray Sickels, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, defeated Paonia’s No. 2-ranked Jorge Quinonez 4-2 in overtime of the 160-pound final.

Josh Altman of Paonia, who is ranked No. 1 at 106 pounds, moved up to 113 and defeated Meeker’s Tristin Pelloni 13-3. Pelloni is ranked fourth at 113.

Other Paonia champions were Bo Pipher (126), William Austin (170), Morgan Rieder (182) and Tony Darling (285).

Montrose’s Jeremiah Banuelos defeated defending 2A state champion Jesse Reed of Paonia 3-2 in the 120-pound final. Banuelos is ranked fifth in Class 4A.

Girls Basketball

Bri Baldwin scored 20 points, including four 3-pointers, as host Grand Junction defeated Montezuma-Cortez 61-17.

Baldwin has hit seven 3-pointers in the Tigers’ past two games.

“She’s not hesitating right now, which is what she has to do,” Tigers coach Sam Provenza said. “She’s playing within herself. She’s a jump-shooter; that’s her game.”

Baldwin also is a defensive stopper, helping the Tigers (13-2, 3-1 Southwestern League) limit Montezuma-Cortez (0-12, 0-4) to 11 first-half points.

Also for the Tigers, Keri Rogers and Tori Catlett had seven points apiece.

“You expect a team like this to get better every game,” Provenza said. “And we’re starting to see some better leadership from some of the junior kids.”

Palisade 49, Summit 34: The Bulldogs outscored Summit 20-7 in the fourth quarter to pull away in a 4A Western Slope League game.

Cruz Maestas led Palisade with 12 points, and Casey Brown, Jenna Brown and Aspen Guray each netted 10 points.

Delta 82, Battle Mountain 25: The Panthers outscored Battle Mountain 27-2 in the first quarter and cruised from there.

Glenwood Springs 51, Steamboat Springs 41: Delaney Gaddis scored 12 points to lead the Demons.

Meeker 67, Plateau Valley 22: Meeker outscored Plateau Valley 18-2 in the first quarter and 17-4 in the third.

Other scores: Montrose defeated Durango 62-20; Moffat County beat Grand Valley 57-37; Olathe topped Cedaredge 44-31; Hotchkiss beat West Grand 65-38; and Gunnison defeated Basalt 52-26.

Boys Basketball

Jesus Aguirre scored 10 points from the foul line to finish with a team-high 16 as Palisade (9-4, 7-1 4A Western Slope League) defeated Summit 66-51.

Skyler Miller and Luke McLean each had 14 points, both hitting two 3-pointers, for the Bulldogs.

Glenwood Springs 42, Steamboat Springs 30: Grant Fegan scored a team-high 11 points for the Demons, who outscored Steamboat 29-14 in the second half.

Rangely 61, De Beque 32: Rangley raced to a 16-2 lead after one quarter. David Aiuto led De Beque with 20 points.

Other scores: Montrose defeated Durango 45-44; Moffat County beat Grand Valley 51-46; and West Grand topped Hotchkiss 47-43.
