Turnovers costly in Mavs’ loss

Lindenwood (Mo.) University took advantage of 25 turnovers to defeat the Colorado Mesa men’s lacrosse team 5-4 in a Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association game Thursday night in St. Charles, Mo.

The Lions (5-5, 3-4 WILA) scored two goals in the fourth quarter, including one with a man-advantage in the victory.

Mesa was led by Daniel Caddoo with three goals. Austin Pridham scored one goal. James Sharp had two assists and goalie Brad Brandenburg had 10 saves.

The Mavericks (7-4, 5-2 WILA) dropped into a first-place tie with Dominican (Calif.) University in the WILA.

College Golf

Jennifer Hilts’ first spring tournament title earned her RMAC golfer of the week honors.

Hilts, a Colorado Mesa senior from Bend, Ore., won the Maverick Spring Invitational at Tiara Rado by two strokes over teammate Jessica Berve.

It’s the second such honor for Hilts, who also was the golfer of the week in the fall after winning the Grizzly Invitational in Alamosa. She was the only player in the Maverick Invitational to record back-to-back rounds in the 70s. Her first-round 76 tied her low round of the spring season.

The Mavericks play in the RMAC championships Monday and Tuesday at Wigwam Golf Club in Litchfield Park, Ariz.

Jim Knous, a Colorado Mines senior from Basalt, is the men’s golfer of the week after winning the DQ Wolf Pack Invitational in a playoff.

College Tennis

Kelleen Sera went undefeated in singles and doubles last weekend for Colorado Mesa at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles and was selected the RMAC women’s player of the week.

The senior from Lahaina, Hawaii, lost only three games in her two singles matches, and with her twin sister, Kaitlan, dropped only three games in their two doubles wins.

Kelleen Sera has won three straight singles matches and she and her sister have won nine of their past 11 doubles matches, five in a row.

The Mavericks, 3-0 in conference duals and 8-4 overall, play Nebraska-Kearney and Western New Mexico this weekend in Pueblo.
