Warriors roll past Cortez in volleyball
The Central High School volleyball team capped an unbeaten Southwestern League season Saturday with a 25-22, 25-15, 25-14 victory at Montezuma-Cortez.
After a close first game, the Warriors took easy victories in the final two games.
Kristina Lindsey’s four aces and five kills paced a balanced Central effort. Amy Kame had 14 kills and four blocks. Haleigh Higgins had 24 assists, seven kills and four blocks.
Central (18-1, 10-0 SWL) awaits word from the Colorado High School Activities Association on this weekend’s district tournaments. The seedings for the first round of the state playoffs will be announced today by CHSAA.
Central is expected to get a home site on Saturday for one of Class 5A’s eight district tournaments.
First-round pairings for the state soccer playoffs in all classifications also will be released today by CHSAA.
Kevin Martinez of Palisade finished fourth in the Class 4A Region 5 cross country race in Aspen.
That earned Martinez a berth in next week’s 4A state championships in Fort Collins.
Chris Zirkle of Moffat County won the boys race in 17 minutes, 23.8 seconds, finishing 21 seconds ahead of Martinez and helping his team win the title.
Sutton Frey of Montrose and two Delta runners, Daniel De La Rosa and Josh Walker, earned individual state qualifications.
Maddy Jourgensen and Eryn Leonard of Moffat County finished first and second in the 4A girls race, respectively.
Montrose’s Rebecca Long, Dana Shellhorn, Brooke Tobler and Hanna Bowden all had top-15 finishes. They helped the Indians win the team title.
Derek Laue of Bayfield won the 3A Region 1 boys race but Gunnison took the team title. Brandi Krieg of Grand Valley was the 3A girls champion.
In the 2A Region 4 boys race, Ty Williams of Telluride took the individual title. Erin Kelly of Crested Butte Community School was the 2A girls regional champion. Mancos placed three runners in the top six to win team honors.
