Warriors top Rifle in soccer

The Central High School girls soccer team didn’t get the fast start it wanted Saturday, but the Warriors found their rhythm to beat Rifle 9-1 at Long Family Memorial Park.

“Once they got going it was nice to watch,” Central coach Doug Beach said.

Stacey Kinnett and Ashley Paul each scored three goals and goalie Taylor Else had four saves.

The Grand Junction girls lost 2-1 on the road to Coronado.

Danielle Erickson scored the only goal for the Tigers, with Coronado’s Catherine Ruder logging one goal and an assist.

The Fruita Monument girls got ahead early but couldn’t hold on, tying 1-1 against Sand Creek.

Karlee Davis scored to give the Wildcats a lead going into halftime.  Sand Creek’s Megan Gillespie had the game tying goal.

The District 51 swim team opened its season with a win at the Montrose Invitational.

The Griffins finished with the top swimmer in 17 of the 22 events at the contest. Cyrus Pearo, Ty Walton and Nick Neste all won multiple events and Adam Vogel took first place in diving with a score of 311.85.
