Weather causes many games to be postponed

Snow in the Four Corners area has caused the postponement of several prep basketball games this weekend.

As of Thursday afternoon, Central High School Athletic Director Randy Powell confirmed that Durango is unable to make the trip this weekend. The Demons were scheduled to play Fruita Monument today and Central on Saturday.

With Durango postponing, that leaves the Warriors without a game for the weekend. Central’s opponent today, Montezuma-Cortez, postponed its game early on Thursday.

“We got the call that Durango had cancelled,” Powell said. “When I looked at it, rescheduling one is do-able, two might be a nightmare.”

A makeup date has not been announced.

Cortez’s games Saturday at Fruita Monument are scheduled to be played, but have been moved back 30 minutes with the girls varsity starting at 12:30 p.m and the boys varsity following at 2 p.m.

Cortez Athletic Director Justin O’Connor said he’s waiting until today to make any call on the Fruita Monument games.

“As of right now we are delaying it,” O’Connor said Thursday. “We want to see what kind of snow we get in this area and will make the call anywhere from noon to two (today).”

Fruita Monument Athletic Director Denny Squibb said he’s set up alternative dates in early February with both Durango and Cortez pending this weekend.

Basketball wasn’t the only sport affected.

The Central-Palisade swimming team was scheduled to compete today at Cortez, but will swim against Gunnison and Fruita Monument at 4 p.m. today at Orchard Mesa Pool. Central-Palisade will swim in the Grand Junction Quadrangular at 9 a.m. Saturday at El Pomar Natatorium on the campus of Mesa State College.
