Western St. VB coach resigns after nine years
Western State College volleyball coach Shawn Back has resigned after nine years as the Mountaineers’ head coach.
Back leaves with a 126-132 record, leading Western State to two RMAC tournaments and two NCAA Division II regional appearances.
“I’ve been here a long time and it’s time for me do to something else,” Back said in a statement released by the college. “I always wanted to leave and know that the team was in good hands. I didn’t want to leave with them on a bad note.
“We have a very young team and every position is filled and the assistant coaches are great. I feel like I can leave and everything will be OK.”
The Mountaineers won the 2000 RMAC West Division title and its first RMAC tournament championship in Back’s first year as head coach, and in 2001, Western State won the Southwest Regional title and reached the NCAA Elite Eight, going 29-6.
The college has not finalized plans on a search to replace Back.
