Western Slope quilters win outreach awards

Joan Walker

Karen Holt

Shirley Hanson

Three Western Slope quilters recently received 2011 Outreach Awards from the Colorado Quilting Council: Shirley Hanson of Collbran and Karen Holt and Joan Walker, both of Grand Junction.

The honor goes to individuals or organizations who have made a significant contribution to quilting — educational, historical, creative and cultural.

• Shirley Hanson is a founding member of Sunset Slope Quilters and since has served in every chairmanship within the organization. Sunset Slope celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Hanson is a longtime member of Colorado Quilting Council and served on the Western Slope documentation committee when it started in 1995 and continues its work today.

The committee’s purpose is to compile a database with records and photographs of quilts throughout the state.

• Karen Holt was recognized for her excellent workmanship and willingness to teach fellow quilters. She is a past president of Colorado West Quilters Guild, in which she has served in a variety of other roles, and a member of Sunset Slope Quilters. Through her church, Holt helped girls ages 8–17 make blankets for Project Linus, and she assembled and stitched a communal quilt documenting the history of the women’s relief society.

• Joan Walker is a past president of Sunset Slope Quilters and has actively served in many other leadership positions over the years. Walker has directed the Western Slope documentation committee of the Colorado Quilting Council since 2005 and writes articles for the statewide newsletter. She has been characterized by her peers as “really dedicated.”

Each woman was presented with a pin and certificate and thanked for her hard work and dedication to quilting.
