Whiteleys hoping to win national titles in Houston
Jim Whiteley will go for his third consecutive victory this weekend in the NHRA O’Reilly Spring Nationals at Royal Purple Raceway in Houston.
The Grand Junction NHRA Division 7 Top Alcohol Dragster champion is second in the national points standings entering the race. He won one national event and reached the quarterfinals in the other this season.
“With the new points structure, if you drag your feet a little, it’s hard to make up,” said Whiteley in a press release. “Our goal, as it has been the past few years is to compete for the national title. This year you only have three races you can drop, so you really have to make them count.”
Competitors in the Top Alcohol Dragster class can claim their best seven out of the first 10 nationals they race.
Whiteley and the YNot Racing team were the No. 1 qualifier in the previous national race in Las Vegas and set the top speed on the way to victory.
Qualifying begins today for the alcohol cars with two sessions, followed by one final session Saturday morning. Eliminations begin Saturday event and conclude Sunday.
Annie Whiteley is looking for her first national event round win in the O’Reilly Spring Nationals in the NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car class.
Jim’s wife has already won a regional event in Las Vegas last month in only her fourth start in the class. The rookie lost in the first round of the past national event in a close race.
“When we won the regional race in Vegas, we kind of had the same approach; we just wanted to get our first round win,” she said in a release. “We just want to get that first round win at a national under our belts. Once we do that, we can focus on winning the second round, eventually up to winning (an event).”
