The Daily Sentinel sports department staff

Dale Shrull

Prediction: Denver 27, Seattle 23

Key to the game: Big games are about big plays and turnovers, and Denver needs to win both those battles. Defensively, it comes down to containing Seattle’s two main offensive threats — Marshawn Lynch on the ground and Russell Wilson’s scrambling. Peyton Manning will move the ball, but more than one turnover could doom Denver. Special teams will play a role, and the Broncos must get touchdowns instead of field goals. Smart pick in cold weather would probably be on the Seahawks and their defense but I think Manning will chisel another piece of his legacy of greatness with his second Super Bowl win.

Tim Harty

Prediction: Denver 23, Seattle 21

Key to the game: Teams with defenses as good as Seattle’s is this year traditionally win the Super Bowl (think middle-to-late-1970s Steelers, 1985 Bears, 1986 Giants, 2000 Ravens, 2002 Buccaneers). And the record-setting offenses often get slowed down, even in victory (1999 and 2001 Rams, 2009 Saints, 2007 and 2011 Patriots). I see that happening today, but I think the ultimate difference will be Denver’s defense. The Broncos will limit running back Marshawn Lynch and contain quarterback Russell Wilson, and Denver’s offense will do just enough to win this game.

Allen Gemaehlich

Prediction: Denver 24, Seattle 20

Key to the game: The Broncos offense clicks when it gets into a rhythm. As long as the offensive line can prevent the Seahawks from disrupting the rhythm and the Broncos don’t turn the ball over, Manning can find the right receiver. Denver’s defense will need another solid performance against the run and force Seattle into passing situations.

Matt Meyer

Prediction: Seattle 31, Denver 28

Key to the game: Full disclosure, I’m a Broncos fan. But the Seahawks secondary is scary. They’re mean, nasty, physical and absolutely gigantic. If any team can slow down the Broncos record-breaking passing attack, it will be the best secondary in recent memory. The front seven for Seattle is the X-factor, and if Peyton is rushed, the Legion of Boom will feast on some ducks. A late interception sets up a game-winning field goal by Steven Hauschka and a heartbreaking loss for the Broncos. Marshawn Lynch rushes for more than 100 yards with three touchdowns and stuffs his face with Skittles during the post-game celebration.

Robert McLean

Daily Sentinel copy editor/designer

Prediction: Denver 37, Seattle 24

Key to the game: Peyton Manning’s weapons prove to be too much for the NFL’s top-ranked defense, as Demaryius Thomas burns Richard Sherman for a pair of touchdowns, and Knowshon Moreno keeps the Seahawks off-balance with more than 100 yards rushing and a score. The Broncos reverse a fourth-quarter deficit with two late TDs, and “This One’s For Peyton!

Greg Mikolai

President, District 51 School Board

Prediction: Denver 28, Seattle 13

Key to the game: “The biggest key to the game is can (Broncos wide receiver Wes) Welker be a factor. If he gets six to eight catches, he’s going to be a factor.”

Lori Buck

Fruita mayor

Prediction: Denver 35, Seattle 21

Key to the game: “The key will be Mr. Peyton Manning and the weather.”

Prediction: Denver 27, Seaslugs 13

Key to the game: “The key to this victory will be a near flawless performance by the Bronco offense combined with a great Bronco downfield pass defense.”

Colorado Student

Prediction: Denver 34, Seattle 23

Key to the game: “There will be a lot of early field goals with Manning opening up the offense at the end of the third quarter to pull away in the fourth.”

Key to the game: “As long as the receivers get open, Manning will be the key to dominating the Seahawks.”
