Wildcats roll to win over Cortez in soccer

Fruita Monument’s Wes Padgett, Noah Nelson and Avery Kuper each scored two goals as the Wildcats routed Montezuma-Cortez 9-0 in Southwestern League boys soccer Saturday.

Nelson also had two assists for the Wildcats, who outshot the Panthers 26-6 and improved to 7-1-1 in the league and 8-5-1 overall.

Durango 4, Central 2: The Demons broke open 1-1 game after Central center defender Miguel Rodriguez had to exit the game with a shin injury. Durango, also with a man advantage because of a Central red card, scored three times in a seven-minute span, beginning in the 62nd minute.

Josh Tettingill and Matt Miller scored goals for the Warriors, who dropped to 5-4-2, 3-3-2 SWL.

Central coach Doug Beach said Saturday’s game marked the first time this season an opponent has scored more than three goals against the Warriors.

Palisade 3, Delta 1: Marques Combs scored on a penalty kick in the 57th minute to break a scoreless tie, then assisted on Spencer Jackson’s goal 15 minutes later. Joe Talbott added the final goal a minute after Jackson’s tally for a 3-0 lead in the Western Slope Conference game.

The Bulldogs outshot Delta 20-15, and goalkeeper Conner Carey made 14 saves for Palisade.


Morgan Thieszen had 11 kills and Tahverle Hodges had six aces as Palisade beat Montezuma-Cortez 25-18, 27-25, 25-18 in nonleague volleyball Saturday.

Hodges also led the Bulldogs (11-5) with 20 digs, while Shannon Rhodes topped the team with 17 assists.
