Wildcats rout Cortez, wrap up SWL soccer championship

The Fruita Monument High School boys soccer team clinched the Southwestern League championship Saturday with a 9-0 win over Montezuma-Cortez in Cortez.

Wesley Padgett scored two goals and spent the final 25 minutes of the game in net for the Wildcats, combining with goalkeeper Dominic Gaty on the shutout.

Fruita (12-2, 9-0 SWL) has a plus-36 goal differential in league games and plus-43 in all contests this season.

The Wildcats host second-place Montrose at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Canyon View Park in a match that could decide whether Fruita will host an opening-round state playoff game.

The Panthers dropped to 1-13, 0-9.

Durango 3, Central 1: Matt Miller scored in the fifth minute for Central, but the Demons (7-5-1, 5-4-1 SWL) tied the SWL contest in the 38th minute on the first of two goals by Zeb Soignier.

The Warriors dropped to 5-9, 2-7.

Summit 9, Palisade 4: Palisade (5-10) tied the game three times, including 4-4 on Marques Combs’ goal five minutes into the second half, but the Tigers (7-4-1) scored the final five goals to win the Class 4A Western Slope League game.

Combs scored the Bulldogs’ first goal to tie the game 1-1 in the 13th minute, and teammate Keenan High tied the game 2-2 with a goal in the 31st minute. Summit, however, scored twice more before the half for a 4-2 advantage.

Two minutes into the second half, Nesh Garcia scored for the Bulldogs, and Combs scored three minutes later.


Rifle rallied in the third quarter, but four turnovers ultimately cost the Bears in a 20-10 nonleague loss at Conifer.

The Bears (5-2) scored 10 points in the third quarter to pull within 14-10 after trailing 14-0 at the half.

Rifle could have taken the lead but the Bears ended a 
16-play drive by losing a fumble at the Lobos’ 1-yard line.

Conifer (5-2) added a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Bears rushed for 213 yards, led by Javier Nunez with 59 yards and Kellin Leigh with 53 yards.


Fruita Monument bounced back from its first league loss by beating Montezuma-Cortez 25-21, 25-23, 25-21 in an SWL match.

Jordan Eatwell and MacKenzie Schuller had 12 kills apiece to lead the Wildcats (13-3, 8-1 SWL). Savannah Ashmore had 31 assists and Joelle LeFevre added 29 digs.

Durango 3, Central 1: The Demons fended off a spirited Central effort through three games to win 27-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-8.

Madi Marston led Central (6-11, 2-7 SWL) with five blocks and five kills. Bella Bernazzani paced the Demons (8-7, 5-2) with 10 kills and seven blocks.
