Wildcats’ Kovach will play volleyball at Otero Junior College
Camille Kovach led the Fruita Monument High School volleyball team in kills, attacks and aces as a senior in 2010.
Now Kovach, an outside hitter, is taking her skills at the net to the next level.
Tuesday at Fruita Monument, Kovach signed a national letter of intent to attend Otero Junior College in La Junta.
“It’s really exciting,” Kovach said. “Once we ended our club season, I realized how happy I was playing volleyball. I didn’t want it to end, and wanted to continue playing no matter where it was at.”
During her senior season, Kovach had 329 kills, 38 aces and 314 digs for the Wildcats, who finished 18-4.
Kovach was selected first-team all-Southwestern League as a senior and second-team all-SWL as a junior.
The 5-foot-9 Kovach had more than 20 kills in a match five times her senior season, including a career-high 28 against Castle View in the first match of the district playoffs.
Kovach has the physical attributes on the court, but was also noticed for her ability to lead.
“For me it’s about leadership and taking charge,” Kovach said. “That’s what I’ve always tried to do.”
Kovach wants to major in sports medicine or exercise science and will focus on her general education classes at Otero.
Kovach will be coached by Melissa Anderson at Otero. The Rattlers finished 18-21 last season.
“Otero’s coach was great, and that helped a lot in the process,” Kovach said. “I hope to get a lot better, then hopefully transfer to a Division II school somewhere.”
