When Wilfredo Rodriguez was drafted by the Colorado Rockies, his mother reminded him of a story when he was a little boy.
“When I was 5 years, I tell my mom I want to get to the big leagues,” Rodriguez said. “I was watching the TV and said I want to be there one day. Now I get the opportunity. Hopefully in a few years, you’ll see me in the big leagues.”
Rodriguez got an opportunity to play on a select academy team when he was 15 years old. He played at the academy for three years and was selected in the seventh round of the 2012 draft by the Rockies.
“I was crying,” Rodriguez said. “I didn’t think I was going to get drafted. Then my agent said the Rockies just called.”
Grand Junction has impressed him since he arrived June 14.
“It’s great,” Rodriguez said. “The people here I like a lot. Everybody want to cook for me. People are very good here. It’s not like in Puerto Rico. I like the stadium. So far, I love it.”
Rodriguez was a third baseman, but he switched to catcher in the Puerto Rico Academy at the advice of the instructors to better his chances of making the major leagues.
“It’s been good so far,” Rodriguez said.
He’s not satisfied simply being drafted.
“My goal is to be one year in every league,” Rodriguez said. “One year in rookie ball, one year in A, one in Double A. My goal is to not repeat any league. I want to get to the major league so bad.
“For this year, my goal is be the defensive catcher. That’s very important, and I want to hit .300. With all the hard work, I know I can do it.”
