Wykert, Dodson go 1-2 in tourney

Kristyn Wykert won a flight singles title to lead the Colorado Mesa women’s tennis team Sunday in the inaugural Metro State Invitational in Denver.

The junior defeated teammate Emily Dodson 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 to win the Flight 2 bracket for the No. 4, 5 and 6 singles players for each team. Wykert defeated another teammate, Shannen McNamara, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) in the semifinals.

“That was a great tournament,” CMU coach Dan MacDonald said. “We got a lot of matches, which we needed and we showed we had great team depth.”

Dodson and Rachel McLaughlin won the Flight 2 doubles title, defeating Colorado Christian 8-2 in the final.

McLaughlin won the Flight 1 singles consolation bracket. Katie Kirby won the Flight 3 singles title and Katie Metz won Flight 4.

Colorado Mesa freshman Cody Freischlag reached the Flight 2 singles finals in the men’s tournament.

The Mavericks’ No. 1 doubles team of Jordan Lyden and Spencer Weinberg reached the Flight 1 doubles final, but lost to a duo from Seward County (Kan.) Community College. Freischlag and Blake Demond lost in the Flight 1 doubles semifinals.

Colorado Mesa plays in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Central Region tournament this weekend in Wichita Falls, Texas.
