Wykert lifts Mesa women’s tennis team past Metro
Kristyn Wykert came through for the Colorado Mesa women’s tennis team in the deciding match.
The freshman defeated Metro State’s Sam Schall 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 6 singles match to give the Mavericks a 5-4 RMAC victory on Thursday afternoon at the Elliott Tennis Center.
Mesa (13-7, 2-0 RMAC) won four singles matches and one doubles match for the team victory.
“Their doubles were better than I thought,” CMU coach Dan MacDonald said. “Our two doubles had some chances, but we bounced back in singles.”
Kelleen Sera and Kaitlan Sera won at No. 1 doubles and No. 1 and 2 singles. Shannen McNamara won at No. 4 singles.
Metro State’s men picked up a big win in doubles to propel the Roadrunners to a 7-2 victory over Mesa.
Metro’s No. 1 doubles team won 9-8 (7-5) to win two of the three doubles matches.
“If we get that (team) point, I don’t know if we win the dual, but it puts more pressure on their guys,” MacDonald said. “We’re young, but I can’t complain about our effort.”
Mesa freshman Jordan Lyden won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Brason Hollabaugh and Jon Casson won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.
