Trevor Olkowski of Grand Junction High School chips onto the ninth green Monday during the first round of the Class 5A boys golf state tournament at Bookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction.

Solid plan, but a sour day

Olkowski faces nine-shot deficit after first round

The 3-over-par 74 Trevor Olkowski carded Monday at the Class 5A boys golf state tournament wasn’t indicative of the round he shot.
The Grand Junction High School senior’s driver cooperated only intermittently at Bookcliff County Club, as more than a few tee shots sailed into the rough, a far cry from his normal precision. His approaches were incredibly solid, especially from the rough, but never quite gave him an easy line on a putt.
After 17 holes of grinding through a frustrating round of golf, Olkowski missed a birdie putt from inside 10 feet on the ninth green. It was only the second round of golf Olkowski has shot over par this season, and it happened at the Tigers’ home course.
As Grand Junction coach Tom LeFebre said: “golf can be funny that way.”
