Grand Junction High School head coach Sam Provenza gives his girls basketball team guidance during a timeout on the floor in a recent game against Fruita Monument at Fruita.

Shrull: Always realistic, Tigers coach Provenza looks forward to teaching

Another close game melted into a loss with a funk-filled fourth quarter.

But the girls team of Grand Junction showed improvement.

Just like coach Sam Provenza said they would early in the season.

That was earlier in the season, and the Tigers’ season came to an end last Tuesday with a playoff loss.

As always, Provenza relished his role as coach, cheerleader, jokester, counselor and optimist.

He doesn’t weave outlandish tales of optimism either. Coaches also have to be realists.

Just finishing his 24th year as a head girls coach — the past 17 at Grand Junction and seven with Palisade — he’s seen plenty of good, bad and ugly.

He doesn’t necessarily enjoy all three of those but he has an appreciation for the challenges that come from all three.
