Shanna Halalilo, right, played for Black Hills State last season when the Yellow Jackets fell to the top-seeded Mavericks, who won the RMAC Shootout. This season, Halalilo plays for Colorado Mesa, and said she enjoys the added pressure of playing for a team with postseason aspirations. The Mavericks host Western New Mexico today.

Right side of it

Halalilo likes Mesa's high expectations

Perhaps no one understands what can happen in the RMAC Shootout better than Shanna Halalilo.
The senior guard for the Colorado Mesa women’s basketball team was part of Black Hills State’s week-long odyssey last season, when the No. 6 seed knocked off No. 3 Fort Lewis in Durango in the first round, then No. 2 CSU-Pueblo in the semifinals.
And she remembers all too well watching the Mavericks cut down the nets at Brownson Arena.
“It’s really weird being on a different side than last year, a little bit more pressure,” she said Monday before practice. “Last year we went in and it was really light, no one expects us to win, no expectations or anything, which is nice, but I can tell you, it’s way better on this side. Way nicer. Even though you have more pressure, it’s such a better feeling when you’re expected to win something.”
