Cory Hahn speaks to the crowd and urges the players in the audience to advantage of opportunities to pursue their dreams during Friday’s Alpine Bank Junior College World Series banquet at Two Rivers Convention Center. Hahn was a highly recruited baseball player who planned on playing in the major leagues until he broke his C5 vertebrae sliding into second base in his freshman year of college at Arizona State University. Although paralyzed from the chest down, the Arizona Diamondbacks hired him to do scouting for the club.

‘Appreciate the moments’

JUCO banquet speaker tells players to enjoy playing game

Cory Hahn, with a white shirt, black jacket and a narrow black tie, looks like a young, high-flying baseball guy.
He looks like he belongs in a Major League Baseball front office. His words exhibit baseball knowledge, and, at 23 years old, his youth allows him to connect with young players.
His words as the keynote speaker Friday at the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series banquet also told of adversity.
Hahn, as a freshman playing baseball at Arizona State, fractured his C-5 vertebrae on a slide into second base. On a double steal, Hahn’s head struck the knee of the opposing second baseman, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down.
It ended his playing career, but it started Hahn on a different path.
