Kasel the thief

Guard’s 7 steals spark Mesa’s defense in RMAC Shootout win

If Laurel Kasel wasn’t stepping in front of passes, she was slapping them away, chasing down loose balls, picking them up and sprinting the other way.
The junior guard for the Colorado Mesa women’s basketball team had a career-high seven steals Tuesday night, half of Mesa’s total. Her defense sparked the Mavericks’ second-half run into the RMAC Shootout semifinals with a 57-41 victory over Western New Mexico.
“I recognized they were kind of putting the ball down, and every time they got it, they would put their head down and dribble,” Kasel said of using her long arms to her advantage. “I just kind of capitalized off that.”
